David William Duchovny was born to a Jewish father of Ukrainian origin and a Protestant mother of Scottish origin. They divorced the year David turned eleven. He long thought his last name was Russian, when in fact he recently discovered that he was of Ukrainian descent. He was a very shy and reserved child, which amused his brother, who liked to pretend he was mentally retarded. However, this is not the case. David intended to teach and obtained a degree in English literature from Princeton University as well as an MA from Yale University, where he began having an interest in dramatic art. He then appeared in some local plays.
